Employees evaluate their pay, and the fairness of Employees evaluate their pay, and the fairness of their pay, relative to other employees in the organisation. Employees measure the ratio of their total compensation & benefits (salary, bonus’, flexibility, working conditions) to their effort, ability and experience at work, and then compare it to others.

If there’s a perceived inequity employees can usually be depended upon to act in ways in which they believe restores equity. Such as:
💫Reducing their output at work such as not working as hard, not contributing to discussions, going through the motions and doing the bare minimum
💫Increasing their “compensation” ie: theft. Research was conducted in several manufacturing businesses who had to temporarily reduce pays by 15%, it found the incident of theft amongst the workforce doubled during this time.
💫An increase in dysfunctional behaviours such as high turnover, frequent absences and and unwillingness to work as part of a team.

When looking at creating an effective compensation and benefits strategy you are looking at being competitive to what is happening externally and achieving parity internally to ensure you are achieving the right outcomes from your strategy, as well as ensuring it aligns with your strategic and operational goals.

As with anything in your business it should be approached in a considered and consistent way, backed up by research and data.

I’ve been thinking a lot about value lately, mai I’ve been thinking a lot about value lately, mainly whether the processes that businesses have in place, and that they’ve paid a lot of money for, are actually adding value to their business.

I’m going to drop a truth bomb right now, external HR consultants have a bad name - so many business owners I’ve spoken to have been sold systems that add zero value to their operations, have been locked into contracts and as the final insult to injury - are paying close to $10k a year for the honour. 

My industry has gone the way of salespeople and second rate call centres and I’m p**ed off because it makes businesses wary of all consultants, and when that happens the business and their employees suffer.

The primary role of HR in a business is to add value - through risk minimisation & strategies that engage and motivate your people. And how that looks for your business will look different to how it will look for the business next door.

A common misconception by employers is they have t A common misconception by employers is they have the discretion of when to terminate an employee under their Drug & Alcohol Policy or not. 

Policies which state "the employer may terminate the employee at their discretion" are misleading and do not stand up to employment law legislation when terminations under the policy are applied discretionary. Particularly when they policy exists in a safety critical workplace

Important points to note, policies should:
✨ be unambiguous and be provided to employees backed up by regular training ie: be clear on the parameters of the testing, is it 1 positive test and you are gone or 3 strikes and you're out. Provide information relating to the policy in your employee handbooks & provide employees easy access to your policies
✨ be implemented fairly with clear information provided as to the consequences for non-compliance
✨ be based upon a clear rationale that its purpose is to ensure the health and safety of all employees
✨ expressly state that disciplinary action including dismissal will be taken where an employee fails to comply - and this must be applied consistently across the workforce in order for the policy to be considered "fair"

We advertised on Seek and their socials and received zero applications 

When this happens it’s so disheartening, this would be such a great place to work but the factors of small business; non mining and regional just work against you

And this is the reality SME’s face every day

At the time their social media was basically non existent- 2 or 3 posts a month. And definitely not anything that established a brand personality that prospective candidates could associate a workplace culture with

At Christmas I started working with them to improve their social media presence 

In late January we advertised for an LV Fitter, the results............

From 0 candidates to 13! 5 of whom are already based in Kalgoorlie looking to change employers
